PRESS RELEASE:

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.1 and Camera Raw 5.1 Updates Now Available

Adobe has released updates to Photoshop Lightroom and the Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in, both available immediately as free upgrades for Lightroom 2 and Photoshop CS4 users. The releases provide added raw file support for 15 digital cameras including the Nikon D90, Nikon D700, Canon EOS 50D and Canon EOS 1000D. The Lightroom 2.1 update also includes improvements to Photoshop integration, Web module stability for Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit operating systems, performance with 64-bit Mac OS X 10.5 Macintosh computers, and Keyword migration from Lightroom. A complete list of improvements is available in the Lightroom update documentation.

In addition, Adobe has released a new set of camera profiles available on Adobe Labs. The update includes added support for the Leica M8, Canon EOS 50D, Canon G9, Nikon D90 and Pentax models. Camera profiles are the visual starting point for the raw processing workflow. Since image preferences vary by photographer, Adobe minimizes surprises by supplying default camera profiles that closely emulate the visual looks that photographers normally see from their cameras.

Taschen store opens in London

Monday, October 6th, 2008

We’re big fans of Taschen’s art books, so it was pretty exciting to hear that it has opened a new bookshop in London to complement its existing stores in Los Angeles, New York and Paris, with plans for further expansion in the future. For more information, please see the press release below or visit www.taschen.com.

PRESS RELEASE:

TASCHEN opens London store

TASCHEN is delighted to announce the opening of its London store today, 6 October 2008. Located on the newly developed of Duke of York Square, just off the Kings Road, right next to the new Saatchi Gallery, the store will stock the entire range of TASCHEN books covering art, photography, architecture, film, lifestyle, travel, pop culture and sex.

The London store follows the huge success of TASCHEN’s five stores around the world, in Paris, Cologne, New York, Beverly Hills and Hollywood. Like all other TASCHEN stores, the space has been conceived by the world famous French designer Philippe Starck, with a ground floor at street level and a gallery space in the basement.

About TASCHEN
TASCHEN’s Great Adventure began back in 1980, when eighteen-year old Benedikt Taschen opened a shop in his native Cologne, Germany, to market his massive comic collection. Within a year he began publishing catalogues promoting his wares, but it wasn’t until 1984 that his first art book breakthrough occurred: he purchased 40,000 remainder copies of a Magritte book printed in English, reselling them for a fraction of their original price. From a young age, Taschen had been interested in art but found that art books were too expensive and hard to obtain, and the success of this daring move proved that Taschen was not alone in thinking that the art-book market should be democratized. Soon he began reprinting books under his own name for budget prices and the next year he published his first original title and the first book in the Basic Art series: Picasso. Before long, high-quality-yet-still-inexpensive hardcover books were added to the lineup and in 1989 the landmark double-jumbo Van Gogh: The Complete Paintings hit bookstores around the world.

Starting in the late 1980s, TASCHEN established subsidiaries across the globe and continued to cement its reputation as a publisher of excellent-value books while branching out into new areas such as architecture, design, photography, lifestyle and classics. In 2000, TASCHEN surprised the world by breaking the record for the most expensive book published in the 20th century: copy #1 of Helmut Newton’s SUMO, signed by over 80 celebrities featured in it, fetched a record-breaking $304,000 at a charity auction. A year later TASCHEN launched its cinema collection with Billy Wilder’s Some Like it Hot. Then, in 2003, TASCHEN tipped the scales with its massive, legendary Muhammad Ali tribute book, GOAT.

Twenty-eight years after Benedikt Taschen opened his little comic shop, TASCHEN has grown into one of the most successful and unique publishers in the global market, publishing an eclectic variety of books for people of all tastes and budget ranges, distributed worldwide in over twenty languages. TASCHEN has opened bookshops in Paris, Los Angeles, New York, and now London, with plans to keep expanding to new cities such as Bruxelles, Berlin and Miami as our Great Adventure continues. For the future of publishing, keep your eye on TASCHEN.

OnOne Software has been busy at Photoshop World this year, announcing new Lightroom support for its plug-ins as well as the release of PhotoFrame 4 Standard and Professional Editions. For more information on this new product, see the press release below or visit www.ononesoftware.com.

Press release:

Digital photography software developer announces upgrade to its PhotoFrame plugins that now includes support for Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom™ 2

onOne Software, Inc., a leading developer of innovative software tools for photographers, today announces two significant upgrades to their award-winning applications for adding the perfect finishing touch to digital photos - PhotoFrame 4 Professional and Standard Editions. Now supporting Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 software, the photographer’s essential toolbox for managing, adjusting and presenting large volumes of digital photographs, the PhotoFrame 4 plugin helps photographers of all skill levels to quickly and easily create one-of-a-kind works of art with their images. PhotoFrame 4 adds details once mastered only in the darkroom like unique edge effects, frames, borders, adornments and texture overlays. Expanding upon onOne Software’s award-winning plug-in for Adobe Photoshop software, PhotoFrame 4 delivers hundreds of new frames, including exclusive content from professional wedding photographers Kevin Kubota and Vicki Taufer, that today’s digital photographers are demanding for their professional and personal work.

PhotoFrame 4 also includes a new easy-to-use frame library with new library management options, updated user-interface, cutting-edge new content, new output options for added user control, and more.

“PhotoFrame has long been the choice of professional and advanced amateur photographers that want to add unique and creative details to their digital photos,” said Craig Keudell, president of onOne Software. “With PhotoFrame 4 Professional and Standard Editions, we’ve raised the bar even higher by extending the flexibility and functionality and adding high-quality content that is relevant for today’s demanding digital photographers whether they use Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom 2.”

“While photographers are thrilled with Lightroom and the efficiencies of a digital workflow, their images are still art and options for adding realistic edges or borders, as they would have done in the darkroom, are a consistent request,” said Tom Hogarty, Lightroom Product Manager “It’s great to see PhotoFrame 4 Professional Edition bring this functionality in an easy to use manner to Lightroom 2.”

“PhotoFrame has always been the solution I’ve used to recreate the authentic look of the darkroom for my digital images and montages,” said Jim DiVitale, professional photographer and Photoshop instructor. “With PhotoFrame 4 Professional Edition, onOne Software has added even more authentic content and made it even easier to use by allowing users to resize and adjust multiple frame layers at once.”

“I have always tried to share with my students techniques that give them the best possible results, with the greatest amount of control, with the least amount of steps: ‘Quality, Flexibility & Speed’ is my mantra,” said Jack Davis, Photoshop Hall-of-Famer and author of the best-selling Wow and How to Wow book series. “With the release of PhotoFrame 4 Professional Edition, I am one hundred percent comfortable recommending it as THE time-saving solution for creating the highest quality border and edge effects with a truly incredible amount of creative control. I love it!”

New Features in PhotoFrame 4

New Frame Library - The new Library window in PhotoFrame 4 lets users easily search, browse and preview frames, backgrounds, textures and adornments on their image in real time. Users can immediately see just what each frame selection will look like with their image. A new streamlined light table style view allows users to search and sort frames quickly. With the improved preview quality users can zoom in and choose the best frame for every photo.New Library Management Options - New in PhotoFrame 4 is the ability to change the location of the frame library. Photographers can choose the drive and location and even automatically relocate the library later if needed. In addition, photographers who create and add their own frames can have them automatically added to the PhotoFrame 4 Library making them easier to find in the future.

New & Optimized Content - New cutting-edge content has been added to onOne Software’s PhotoFrame 4 allowing photographers to add an exciting and modern look to their photos and albums. The new content includes more realistic film edges along with new texture overlays, backgrounds and adornments. Additionally, the frame content in PhotoFrame 4 has been completely re-mastered providing photographers with a higher quality preview when choosing the best frame for their photo.

New Output Options - The new options palette allows photographers to control how the frames are applied to their photo. Frames, overlays and adornments can be added to the current layer, or a new layer. In addition, frames can be rendered to their own layer allowing for further adjustments or editing in Adobe Photoshop software. Frames from PhotoFrame 4 can even be applied as a layer mask allowing photographers to selectively blend multiple layers together. The output quality of frames in PhotoFrame 4 has been improved for large images and the on-screen preview even displays the layer options just like they will appear in Adobe Photoshop.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Integration - Photographers using Lightroom 2 can easily access their favorite frames, overlays and adornments from within Lightroom 2. Photographers can apply a preset to a single photo or an entire batch of photos. They can even open one photo to adjust the frame settings and then apply it to a selection of additional images. The integration between Lightroom 2 and PhotoFrame 4 Professional Edition requires Photoshop CS2 or Photoshop CS3.

Resizing and Adjusting Multiple Frames - PhotoFrame 4 allows photographers to mix, match and combine up to 32 frames together in layers just like in Photoshop. With PhotoFrame 4, photographers can select multiple frame layers and adjust their size, orientation, rotation angle, opacity and more in a single step. Additionally, the background image layer can now be adjusted separately to fit perfectly within the combination of edge effects being added.

Pantone GoeBridge and Color Cue 2.1

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Pantone has announced the launch of two new products to expand the Pantone Goe System, which we reviewed in issue 44 of Advanced Photoshop giving it a whopping 5 out of 5 score. Find otu more at www.pantone.com or in the press release below.

Press release:

Pantone Extends Goe System with GoeBridge coated and PANTONE Color Cue 2.1

London, UK, Sept. 2, 2008 – Pantone, an X-Rite company (NASDAQ: XRIT) and the global authority on colour and provider of professional colour standards for the design industries, today announced two new products that extend the PANTONE® Goe™ System – PANTONE GoeBridge™ coated and PANTONE Color Cue® 2.1. PANTONE GoeBridge lets creatives accurately visualise and evaluate how the more than 2,000 solid colors in the PANTONE Goe System will reproduce in CMYK on coated paper. By providing conversion formulas for CMYK, sRGB and HTML in a single guide, GoeBridge empowers designers to easily and confidently repurpose projects for multiple colour spaces, saving valuable time and avoiding costly mistakes.

Additionally, Pantone began shipping PANTONE Color Cue 2.1, the latest version of Pantone’s award-winning, portable colour identification device, which now includes the PANTONE Goe coated and uncoated libraries, as well as the CMYK values from GoeBridge. Both products enable designers to work with the same familiar PANTONE tools they’ve become accustomed to over the years with the PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM®, and ensure consistent colour across design workflows.

“One of the most frequently asked questions about the Goe System is when will there be a guide to accurately compare solid Goe colours to CMYK conversions,” said Richard Herbert, executive vice president and general manager of Pantone. “GoeBridge is exactly what designers have been asking for – the guide displays the closest possible CMYK match for each solid Goe colour, preventing colour surprises and expensive errors when clients try to print Goe colours in four-colour process. We’ve also included sRGB and HTML data for repurposing colours for the Web, which make this an indispensible tool for a variety of design projects.”

“At Landor, the majority of our work centers on branding – where colour is a critical component,” said John H. Bredenfoerder, design director at Landor Associates. “As designers, we never know what type of media a particular brand will touch, so for each project we develop a brand style book that includes the colour conversions for print and Web reproduction to ensure repeatability and colour consistency. GoeBridge will simplify colour conversion and specification across the design process – regardless of the final medium.”

PANTONE GoeBridge coated
Although many PANTONE Goe colours can be successfully reproduced in four-colour process, some cannot because of the inherent gamut limitations of process printing. GoeBridge displays all 2,058 Goe colours in a portable, fan guide format on coated stock alongside their closest four-colour process equivalent. The CMYK values are provided for each process colour and sRGB and HTML values are included for the solid colours, extending the guide’s multimedia capabilities to Web design.
The PANTONE GoeBridge coated guide is produced in a sustainable manner to meet certification standards set forth by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), an independent organisation that promotes responsible management of the world’s forests. Products carrying the FSC label are certified to assure consumers that they come from forests managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations (Certificate Code SW-COC-003183).

The guide is printed using ISO-certified inks on No. 1 grade, 100-pound text-weight coated offset stock.

PANTONE Color Cue 2.1
Color Cue 2.1 now features seven PANTONE Libraries including the complete PANTONE Goe System, both coated and uncoated. Users have access to more than 11,000 PANTONE Colors for use in the architecture, interior design, graphic design and printing and publishing industries. Color Cue 2.1 also includes a new LCD screen with configurable displays for easy viewing. The device records the last 30 colours measured for later reference and is powered by a standard nine-volt battery that lasts for thousands of measurements.

In addition to the Goe library, Color Cue 2.1 includes the PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM for coated, uncoated and matte stock, as well as the PANTONE FASHION + HOME SMART Color System and the PANTONE PAINT + INTERIORS Color Libraries.

PANTONE Goe System
The PANTONE Goe System, announced in September 2007, is the first completely new colour inspiration and specification system for the graphic arts industry since the introduction of the PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM in 1962. The System, bringing 2,058 new PANTONE Colors to market, is comprised of the PANTONE GoeGuide™, PANTONE GoeSticks™, myPANTONE™ palettes, an intuitive software toolset for palette creation, and now PANTONE GoeBridge.

Industry Support
The PANTONE Goe System libraries are accessible in ColorMunki™ Design and ColorMunki Create, part of the first family of jointly developed products from
X-Rite and Pantone announced in March 2008. ColorMunki products offer users a digital counterpart to GoeBridge. The CMYK, sRGB and HTML simulations available in GoeBridge will be accessible within ColorMunki products to bridge analog and digital design. ColorMunki products offer GoeBridge users additional flexibility by providing CMYK simulations for a variety of papers and printing processes. Visit www.colormunki.com for more information.

The PANTONE Goe System is also supported by a number of industry leaders. Among those developing solutions to integrate the system into diverse workflows are Corel, EFI, HP, Xerox and Quark. Visit www.pantone.com/goe for a full list of partners.

To access Goe colors within Adobe® Creative Suite® applications, users can download the coated, uncoated and, starting in October, GoeBridge libraries free of charge at www.pantone.com/goe.

Pricing and Availability
The PANTONE GoeBridge coated will be available in October 2008 for the introductory price of £82.00 excl. VAT / £97.58 incl. VAT. PANTONE Color Cue 2.1 is available immediately for the introductory price of £239.00 excl. VAT / £284.41 incl. VAT

Available in coated and uncoated versions, the complete PANTONE Goe System, including the GoeGuide, GoeSticks and myPANTONE palettes software, is available for £342. The complete system, as well as individual products, can be purchased from the Pantone Web site at www.pantone.com, or from select distribution partners.
